Dialog Corporation provides a colossal source of information on business, market data, intellectual property and technology.

The information services include four important product types for Web access:

• DialogClassic on the WebTM, designed for information professionals who need high-speed access to classic Dialog, providing access to over 600 databases. Non-graphics interface and fast response time.

• DialogWeb®, containing the same information as DialogClassic on the WebTM, but with access through a web browser. Full benefits of the Dialog databases, but knowledge of the Dialog command language is not required.

• DialogSelectTM, a comprehensive selection from Dialog's vast database collection; precision searching combined with the accessibility of the web. DialogSelectTM also includes an Open Access feature aimed at the non-member audience.

• DataStarWebTM, access to the Datastar databases, which focus on European developments.

Besides web products, Dialog also offers Intranet products, 'classic' and Windows products, CD-ROM products and Alerts services. Alerts Services are available for all of the aforementioned products, plus DataStarTM.

Availability and cost
All product descriptions include price information. For DialogClassic on the Web and DialogWeb, users are billed per dialunit, and per downloaded reference. For DialogSelect, users are billed per reference (some are full text). Prices per reference vary between USD 0.5 and USD 20, with USD 3 as a typical price.
Lists of available databases are included in the product descriptions. A table shows the availability of the databases reviewed in the Heat Pump RD&D Portal.

 

Open Access
An interesting feature for the occasional searcher is Open Access in DialogSelect. It offers direct access without passwords, monthly fees or minimum charges. Conducting searches and displaying title lists of search results is free. Users must enter credit card information before the reference can be obtained.
